Systems Engineer

along with onway – how long have you been on board?

Since October 2019, but initially I only worked 40% of the time since I was still finishing my Bachelor’s dissertation.

What tasks does your role include?

My main area of responsibility is the automation of infrastructure, both internally and for customers. The difficulty here is to develop a solution that not only covers an individual use case, but all edge cases too. I also work with the “Mixer”. This is a configuration management app which allows us to manage all the mobile routers that are in use among our customers.

What do you particularly enjoy about your job?

I think it’s great when I can automate a completely new service. It is relatively easy to develop a solution that covers an individual use case. Mostly, however, the same solution is meant to cover several edge cases. While this makes the work more demanding, it is also much more exciting. But it is best if, after the work is finished, the changes can be rolled out across the entire infrastructure at the push of a button.

I also think it’s brilliant that despite being a small company, we still get to work on projects with companies that are well-known nationally and internationally.

Which technologies and topics do you come across in your job?

To automate infrastructure, I mainly work with Ansible and Python. What’s more, I come into contact with every peripheral system for which something is to be automated, such as BIND, Cisco DNA Center, WLAN controller, etc.

What professional expertise are you bringing to the table?

Studying computer science at the HSR Hochschule für Technik Rapperswil taught me all basics. I acquired my specialist knowledge in automation and networking by going on courses and through self-directed study.

What are your plans for the future, what do you definitely want to achieve with onway?

I am currently preparing to sit the Cisco Certified DevNet Expert exam. However, this certification is still relatively new and only one person has passed thus far. I therefore don’t know how realistic my goal is. But you’ve got to be in it to win it!

Why onway? To me, working at / for onway means…

...working in a small company with flat hierarchies that values its employees.

Any final words?

“Break it till you make it."
