Integrated communication solution for Aargau Verkehr

The transport company Aargau Verkehr (AVA) transports over 23 million passengers a year by bus and train between Zofingen and Zurich Altstetten. To offer passengers even greater comfort and to simplify communication between individual vehicles and the control centre, onway was commissioned to install an integrated communication solution for eight trains, each with two on3800 routers.
This integrated communication solution covers different functions. Firstly, high-performance WLAN is provided free of charge for passengers, using which customers can obtain useful travel information in real time or surf the internet, for example. Secondly, the vehicle’s GPS data can be shared with the control centre so that it always knows the current location and speed of its vehicles. Systems such as cash registers, screens and cameras can be connected and centrally managed via the Ethernet connections.
AVA’s particular requirement in this project was that the two routers per train act as a redundant cluster, thereby guaranteeing a highly available vehicle-to-ground connection.
