along with onway – how long have you been on board?

I’ve been a proud member of the onway crew since April 2022.

What tasks does your role include?

I often work directly with clients. On the one hand, this includes setting up new systems – either directly on site or on our cloud. In designing these new systems, the client’s needs should be truly reflected as best as possible. On the other hand, I also implement upgrades, adaptations and expansions to existing systems based on changing needs. This collaborative work often includes training clients’ employees so that they can carry out certain tasks themselves. Last but not least, another of my client-facing tasks includes consulting on software engineering using Python to integrate and automate systems.
In-house, I help to improve our infrastructure and to automate and simplify processes. There are also always things to “troubleshoot” or adjustments to make to the hardware – this gives me an opportunity to grab a screwdriver every once in a while.

What do you particularly enjoy about your job?

As explained previously, my work is extremely diverse and varied. We must always adapt our profound knowledge of our systems to meet new customer needs. This means I must listen to requirements closely and explain our solutions carefully. I also often need a touch of creativity to develop special approaches to solutions. Every assignment is different and presents new challenges.
From a technical point of view, my range of tasks is very diverse too: From public WLAN installations for public authorities and major clients, mobile routers for public transport and mobile internet applications to operating internal applications and maintaining systems, there is a great deal involved.

Which technologies and topics do you come across in your job?

Mainly our products such as mpp, onway director and macman, our mobile routers and all systems and services that accompany them: different types of networks – including WLAN networks, management and maintenance of Linux systems, network device configuration and much more. Moreover, knowledge is also needed to automate and integrate systems using Ansible and Python, for example.
What professional expertise are you bringing to the table?
After training as an electronic engineer (federal VET diploma), I began training as an electrical engineer at the OST (erstwhile called the HSR University of Applied Sciences Rapperswil). At the same time, I started working in my teaching company’s IT department, where I developed and operated various internal software systems as a software developer and later DevOps engineer. As a result, my focus shifted somewhat from electrical engineering towards computer science, even during my studies. Given that this role had moved more and more into the area of designing and managing ERP-related system integration projects, I was then in charge of a new employer’s ERP system. While working there, I gained a deeper understanding of implementing IT systems, and how the advantages of good integration further the goals of the business.
At onway, networking was my main new field – in addition to acquiring knowledge about onway’s own products.

What are your plans for the future, what do you definitely want to achieve with onway?

I would like to support onway in ensuring that client satisfaction remains high and that product feedback also filters through from the projects themselves to the Development team. I would also like to help onway to continually optimise its own infrastructure and processes, so that everyone can concentrate on the exciting things at work.
